Geography Lesson: The Continents

As you may have already seen in the previous post, we have started studying a bit of Geography and we enjoyed it a lot. We have continued working our way through Geography with the Continents lesson, in a Montessory style. Our good friends Camelia and her daughter M. from Mic Atelier de Creatie sent us a beautiful gift for my daughter's 4th birtday: a handmade Montessori continents globe!

Ati vazut probabil in postul anterior ca am inceput sa invatam cate ceva despre geografie, folosind puzzle-ul Melissa & Dough. I. s-a distrat mult calatorind in jurul lumii!

Needless to say, I. is in love with her continents globe, so thank you so much, Camelia and M. for the lovely and inspired present! Here is the globe below, just as we opened it and I. pointing to the continents - looks like she remembered them from our World Map puzzle.

In order to learn how to present the Continents, I have studied several resources online and added them all into the School Resources page, on this blog. There are free presentations, materials, songs, and other online free lessons on Geography. We talked about land and water, about the continents and the oceans, using both the globe and the black and white outline map that is free at Montessori Print Shop.

I plan to make a pin map as the one from Montessori Print Shop, but I thought I should try something else first. Since my daughter is beginning to learn to read (she can recognize words by the beginning letter, by lengths, etc) I've decided to do some magnetic labels (from the same site). I've printed them, applied clear tape and a small magnet on the back.

Am in plan sa fac o harta cu stegulete cum sunt instructiuni la Montessori Print Shop, insa, mai intai, deoarece I. invata sa citeasca (recunoaste cuvintele dupa litera de inceput, lungime etc), mi-a venit idee sa fac etichete magnetice cu denumirea continentelor. Etichetele le-am luat tot de pe Montessori Print Shop, sectiunea gratuita, le-am printat, le-am 'laminat' in scotch si apoi le-am lipit magneti pe spate.

Continents globe and map

First we colored the continents map from Montessori Print Shop to match the continents colors from the map. The labels are in matching colors as well, so it wasn't difficult to match them on the map. It's a good exercise for learning to read as well.

A small recording (the camera was full and it got interrupted.

Another option, more play-based - fishing for the magnetic continents names!

Invitation to play and learn!
We also watched some Continents songs on Youtube (see the School Resources page). We saved the 3-part cards from The Helpful Garden for the next Geography lesson!

Ne-am uitat pe youtube la cantecelele despre continente, urmand ca in perioada urmatoare sa lucram si cu cartonasele in 3 parti cu continente, luate de la The Helpful Garden.
